KEAN SELECTED AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FAVORITE
IN POLL OF LEAGUE'S HEAD COACHES


DEFENDING NJAC CHAMPS SEEKING THEIR 12TH CONFERENCE CROWN


Kean University has been selected as the favorite to win the 2007-08 New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship in a preseason poll of the league’s ten head coaches. The defending NJAC Champion Cougars will be seeking their 12th conference crown since 1982-83.
 
Kean finished the 2006-07 season with a 27-4 overall record and an 11-2 conference mark while winning both the NJAC South Division and the NJAC Championship Tournament. The Cougars, who advanced to the fourth round of the 2006-07 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, were selected to finish first in the South Division and received a league-high seven overall champion votes from the league’s 10 head coaches. Under the direction of 10th-year head coach Michele Sharp, Kean has posted an overall record of 133-107, while capturing a pair of NJAC championships in 2001-02 and 2006-07.
 
The Cougars return a trio of all-conference performers from their championship squad including a first-team guard in junior Melissa Beyruti. In addition, Sharp’s squad returns all-conference players in senior forward Chari Cooper and junior guard Ebony Jackson.
 
The College of New Jersey, which captured the 2005-06 NJAC Championship, was selected to place second in the South Division and received two overall champion votes. Led by 15th-year head coach Dawn Henderson, the Lions have posted an overall record of 266-107, including a mark of 13-14 in 2006-07. TCNJ returns a pair of all-conference performers from its 2006-07 squad including junior center Hillary Klimowicz and senior guard Sara Best.

William Paterson University, which posted a 23-6 overall record while winning the NJAC North Division in 2006-07 with an 11-2 league mark, was selected to place first in the North Division and received one overall champion vote. The Pioneers advanced to the second round of the 2006-07 NCAA Tournament after receiving an at-large bid. Led by 2006-07 NJAC Coach of the Year Erin Monahan, the Pioneers have recorded an overall mark of 259-119 during her 15-year tenure. William Paterson returns a pair of all-conference guards including senior Michelle Pellichero, and the 2006-07 NJAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Elisa Brown.

Montclair State University, which posted an overall record of 18-10 en route to capturing the 2006-07 ECAC Metro Tournament Championship, was selected to place second in the North Division. Led by new first-year head coach Karin Harvey, the Red Hawks return one all-conference player in senior guard Jessica Garrabrant.

Under the direction of 16th-year head coach Joe Fussner, Richard Stockton College was selected to place third in the South Division. Fussner has guided the Ospreys to an overall mark of 240-157, including a record of 14-14 in 2006-07. The Ospreys return one all-conference player in senior guard Lisa Neira.

Rutgers-Newark, which finished 16-11 overall in 2006-07 while advancing to the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament, was selected to place third in the North Division. Led by seventh-year head coach Kevin Morris, the Scarlet Raiders have produced an overall mark of 61-92. Morris’ squad returns one all-conference performer in senior guard Sabrina Sanchez.
 
The coaches’ dark horse selection, New Jersey City University, was selected to place fourth in the North Division. The Gothic Knights are led by third-year head coach Ashante Timoll. Timoll has produced an overall mark of 20-29 during her tenure, including a record of 10-15 in 2006-07.

Rowan University, under the leadership of eighth-year head Gabby Lisella, was selected to place fourth in the South Division. The Profs have posted an overall record of 92-85 during Lisella’s tenure, including a record of 9-16 in 2006-07.
 
Rutgers University-Camden was selected to place fifth in the South Division. Led by new first-year head coach Kate Bowes, the Scarlet Raptors return all-conference senior guard Imani Hafiz from a squad that finished 8-17 in 2006-07.

Ramapo College, under the leadership of second-year head coach Jill Fischman, was selected to place fifth in the North Division. The Roadrunners finished 6-19 overall during Fischman’s rookie season of 2006-07.

The 2007-08 season will represent the second year in the return to divisional play in the conference. The top three regular season finishers in each division will advance to the 2007-08 NJAC Championship Tournament.

First round games on Monday, February 25 will feature the second-place finisher in the North Division hosting the third place finisher in the South Division, and the second place finisher in the South Division hosting the third place finisher in the North Division.

Those first round winners will advance to face the first place finishers in the North and South Divisions respectively in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday, February 27. The two semifinal winners will advance to the 2007-08 NJAC Championship Game on Friday, February 29, to be contested at the site of the highest remaining seed. The NJAC Tournament Champion receives the conference’s automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
